Martha Laatsch

Strength, Balance & Flow (Mondays 6-7:15 pm)

Martha took her first class when she was 21 years old but did not begin a serious study of yoga until 10 years later. In 1991, she began teaching and soon after joined the Michigan Yoga Association where she remains an active member. This affiliation has afforded her the opportunity to study regularly with leading teachers of national and international reputation who teach a variety of yoga methods. Martha’s background in gymnastics and dance informs her understanding, explanation and execution of the postures. Her classes weave together a variety of yoga styles and include breath-initiated movement, attention to body alignment and the linking together of postures into sequences to help support awareness of present moment experience. Martha has been a presenter at numerous community workshops and has taught yoga at Washtenaw Community College, the University of Michigan, and University Hospital.

Janet Smith

Lynette’s interest in yoga began when she was 9 years old. Her big brother invited her to choose any book in the bookstore, and she chose one on yoga and another on humor. After an extended hiatus, with experimentation in many body movement forms, she began her studies with Barbara Linderman in 1979. Those studies are ongoing and she has enjoyed classes with many teachers in Ann Arbor, as well as traveling to workshops throughout the country. At Michigan Heart and Vascular, Lynette joined others in developing a mindfulness-based wellness program. She has done extensive training in personal and spiritual development in the Enneagram Teachings in the Narrative Tradition. Having completed certification in Relax and Renew, she continues the study of yoga therapeutics with Judith Lasater. She is also a certified Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapist.Lynette has been teaching yoga classes since 1985. Her instructional style focuses on postural alignment, breath awareness, yoga philosophy, meditation, and laughter.

Jim MacBain

Assists with Friday Morning Yoga

Janet’s first yoga class in 1980 was held in the quiet chancel of a church near her home in Washington, DC. The peacefulness of the space and the pleasure of pairing movement with breath were the start of many decades of yoga practice. Years later in Indiana, she took classes with Lisa Nail who recommended Barbara Linderman when Janet relocated to Ann Arbor. Thus began an association with Inward Bound. Her current yoga practice is heavily influenced by the teaching of Martha Laatsch and Roddy Wares.

Jim has been practicing yoga since 1976.   His most influential teacher has been Barbara Linderman.  At various times over the years, Jim has enjoyed practicing several different yoga styles.  These include Kripalu, Iyengar, Ashtanga, and White Lotus.  Jim has had the opportunity to study with a number of teachers through yoga retreats and workshops.   Notable teachers have included David Swenson, Judith Lasater, George Purvis, Mary Dunn, and Elise Browning Miller.  Jim brings a warm, caring spirit to a physically challenging and rewarding posture series on Wednesday mornings.
